Vanderbilt toppled 24th-ranked South Carolina 24-17 in a Thursday night SEC game in Nashville. The Gamecocks, who opened the season with a 34-0 rout of NC State, slipped to 1-and-1. Chris Smelley threw for 233 yards and two touchdowns for the Gamecocks, but he also tossed two interceptions. Jared Cook had eight receptions for 111 yards for South Carolina. Chris Nickson threw a touchdown pass and ran for another score for the Commodores, who improved to 2-and-0. Jared Hawkins ran for 84 yards and another touchdown. Vanderbilt defeated South Carolina for the second straight season.
