Air Force football coach Troy Calhoun likes picking academy graduates for his staff when possible, and he found a notable name from the Falcons’ past for his latest opening, according to Frank Schwab of The Colorado Springs Gazette.
Steve Russ, who played linebacker for the Falcons and spent four seasons with the Denver Broncos, including both Super Bowl championship teams, will be the Falcons’ new assistant. He’ll have three titles: assistant head coach, co-defensive coordinator and secondary coach. Charlton Warren, who was promoted to defensive coordinator when Matt Wallerstedt left to Texas A&M, will still run the defense. Warren won’t have a position responsibility, as Wallerstedt did when he coached inside linebackers.
After Russ’ NFL career was over, he was an assistant at Ohio University for four years, coached linebackers and special teams with Syracuse for two seasons, was Syracuse’s defensive coordinator for one season and spent the past four seasons at Wake Forest before he was hired away by Air Force.
Russ was second-team All-WAC in 1994, and was selected to play in the Blue-Gray All-Star Game and the East-West Shrine game following that season. He was a seventh round pick of the Broncos.
