Three Wildcats Demoted

After failing the Wildcats’ set conditioning program, coach Ron Prince announced the demotion of three players on this season’s roster.  Offensive lineman Jordan Bedore, and defensive linemen Raphael Guildry and Xzavier Stewart, were put on the physically unable to perform list.  They’ll remain there until they can pass the conditioning program.  The team started its fall workout practices yesterday, and hopes to get the players back in shape as soon as possible.  Bedore is a co-team captain.  The 6-3, 308-pound senior is on the 2008 Rimington Award watch list.

Hardin County Prep QB Commits To Tigers

Hardin County senior quarterback Will Gilchrist says he will play college football for the University of Memphis, according to the “Commercial Appeal.”  The newspaper reports Gilchrist has decided to sign with the Tigers next year, following a campus visit last weekend.  Gilchrist, a 6-1, 190 pound dual threat quarterback, also had offers from Middle Tennessee, Ohio, and Navy.  The commitment cannot be made official until the February signing period.

Tigers Designate Hall To Start At Quarterback

As the Memphis Tigers opened fall practice Monday, coach Tommy West said he expects junior college transfer Arkelon Hall to be his starting quarterback when the season opens.  Hall comes to the Tigers after a season at College of the Sequoias in California.  He originally signed with Washington State, but never played there, in part due to an injury.  Senior Will Hudgens will be listed behind Hall on the depth chart, with freshman Tyler Bass also available.  Hudgens started two games and played in all 13 last season for the 7-and-6 Tigers, as they earned their fourth bowl appearance in five years.  Memphis opens its season August 30th, at Ole Miss.

Mississippi State Gets Highly-Rated Running Back

Conner

The Mississippi State Bulldogs scored a major coup for their 2009 recruiting class on Friday, landing Louisiana prep star Montrell Conner.

Considered one of the nation’s top running backs, the 6-2, 220-pound Conner rushed for 1,139 yards and 13 touchdowns last season as a junior at Ouachita Parish High School in Monroe, Louisiana.

Conner chose Mississippi State over Alabama, Arkansas, Oklahoma, and USC among others.

Georgia Tech Lands Top DB

Sweating

The Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets added a 12th commit to their 2009 recruiting class on Friday, landing in-state prep star Roderick Sweeting.

A 6-1, 180-pound safety, Sweeting is considered one of the top defensive backs in the 2009 class and will be a senior this Fall at Luella High School in Locust Grove, Georgia.

Sweeting chose Georgia Tech over Clemson, Alabama, Tennessee, and Virginia Tech among others.

Razorbacks Get Top Texas Linebacker

Moss

The Arkansas Razorbacks picked up the eighth commitment  of their 2009 recruiting class on Friday, landing Texas prep star Austin Moss.

Moss, a 6-2, 220-pound inside linebacker, made142 tackles last season as a junior at Rockwall Heath High School in Garland, Texas.

Moss chose Arkansas over Tennessee, Alabama, Kansas, and Wisconsin among others.

Blazers Land Top Georgia RB

Wynes

The UAB Blazers added a top recruit to their 2009 recruiting class on Friday, landing Georgia prep star Rashad Wynes.

A 6-1, 220-pound running back, Wynes rushed for 566 yards and nine touchdowns last season as a junior at Warner Robins High School in Warner Robins, Georgia.

Wynes chose UAB over Louisville, Kentucky, Indiana, and Georgia Tech among others.

Cougars Snare Top In-State Prospect

Dugat

The Houston Cougars have snared a top prospect for their 2009 recruiting class, landing Texas prep star A.J. Dugat.

A speedy wide receiver and defensive back, the 6-1, 200-pound Dugat will be a senior this Fall at Dayton High School in Dayton, Texas.  He is considered an outstanding prospect on both sides of the ball.

Dugat chose Houston over TCU, Texas A&M, Texas Tech, and Arkansas among others.

Coaches Pick Georgia Number 1

Bulldogs

For the first time in school history, the Georgia Bulldogs will begin the season ranked Number 1 in the USA Today Coaches Poll.

In voting results released on Friday, Georgia received 22 first-place votes and 1,438 total points to take the top spot, followed by USC (14 first-place votes and 1,430 points) and Ohio State (14 first-place votes and 1,392 points) who are ranked second and third respectively.

Oklahoma and Florida round out the Top 5 and defending national champion LSU will begin the season as the nation’s sixth-ranked team.
